About NEF → DNG conversion

What is NEF?

NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is Nikon's proprietary RAW format used by DSLR and Z-series mirrorless cameras. It stores 12 or 14 bits of unprocessed sensor data per channel, giving photographers maximum post-processing latitude for exposure, white balance, and colour correction before converting to a shareable format.

What is DNG?

DNG (Digital Negative) is an open RAW format created by Adobe. It is used as a native capture format by Google Pixel phones, Leica, Ricoh, and Pentax cameras, and by Adobe Lightroom's "Convert to DNG" archival function. Like other RAW formats, it stores the full unprocessed sensor data for maximum post-processing latitude.

About NEF

NEF (Nikon Electronic Format) is the proprietary RAW file format used by Nikon DSLR and mirrorless cameras, including the D3x00, D5x00, D7x00, D500, D750, D800, D810, D850 series, and the Z-series mirrorless line (Z50, Z5, Z6, Z7, and their successors). NEF files store the complete unprocessed sensor data at 12 or 14 bits per channel depending on camera model and quality setting, before any in-camera processing — white balance, sharpening, Picture Control profiles — is applied. This raw sensor data is the reason photographers choose RAW: it preserves the maximum dynamic range and color accuracy available from the sensor, allowing corrections in post-processing that would degrade a JPG.

The practical limitation of NEF is compatibility. NEF files require Nikon's ViewNX-i, Capture NX-D, Adobe Lightroom, or another RAW-capable editor to open. They cannot be displayed in browsers, email clients, social platforms, or most software outside the photography production chain. Converting to JPG produces a file that opens everywhere.

When NEF to JPG is the right call

Social media delivery, client handoff by email or Dropbox, web galleries, print labs that accept only JPG or TIFF — all require a processed output format. This converter provides a direct path from NEF sensor data to a ready-to-share JPG without installing Nikon's desktop software or opening a full editing workflow.

About this conversion

Conversion uses ufraw-batch to decode the NEF sensor data and Imagick to produce the output file. The decode applies default auto white balance and a linear tone curve, bypassing Nikon's Picture Control profiles (Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Flat, etc.) and in-camera sharpening. The result is a technically correct, neutral-look render. For output that replicates the camera's in-camera JPEG with your chosen Picture Control applied, export from Nikon Capture NX-D or Adobe Lightroom.

File size note

Nikon NEF files range from 15–50 MB depending on sensor resolution and whether 12- or 14-bit capture is selected. Files from high-resolution bodies — D800, D810, D850 (24–45 MP) — frequently exceed the 20 MB upload limit on this site. In that case, enable lossy NEF compression in-camera (Nikon calls this "Compressed RAW" or "Lossy compressed"), reduce sensor resolution, or export from Nikon Capture NX-D at a reduced file size before uploading.

About DNG

DNG (Digital Negative) is an open RAW format published by Adobe in 2004 as a universal, future-proof alternative to manufacturer-proprietary RAW formats like CR2, NEF, and ARW. It is used in two distinct contexts: (1) as a native capture format by cameras and smartphones — Google Pixel (via the Android Camera API raw output), Adobe Camera on iOS, Leica M-series, Ricoh GR series, Pentax K-series, and Hasselblad cameras — and (2) as a conversion target, with Adobe Lightroom's "Convert to DNG" function repackaging proprietary RAW files into the open DNG format for archival.

Like other RAW formats, DNG stores unprocessed sensor data before white balance, tone curve, or any color science is applied. The key advantage over proprietary formats is longevity: DNG is a published ISO-standard container format that software will continue to support regardless of camera manufacturer decisions. This converter supports both camera-native DNG and Lightroom-converted DNG files.

When DNG to JPG makes sense

DNG files — whether from a Google Pixel, a Leica, an Adobe Camera export, or a Lightroom DNG archive — are not viewable outside dedicated RAW software. For sharing, delivery, or web publishing, JPG is required. This converter handles all DNG source types in a single upload.

About this conversion

ufraw-batch decodes the DNG sensor data using auto white balance and a linear tone curve. For smartphone-origin DNG files (Pixel, Adobe Camera on iOS), the output is a neutral, single-exposure RAW decode without any computational photography processing — no HDR fusion, no AI sharpening, no Night Sight enhancement — that the originating app would apply. For camera-origin DNG files (Leica, Ricoh, Pentax), the output similarly reflects the raw sensor data without camera-specific color science. The output is a technically correct starting point, not a finished image. For output that matches the phone's native JPEG processing, export directly from Google Photos (for Pixels) or from Adobe Lightroom.

File size note

DNG file sizes vary widely depending on source. Smartphone DNGs from Pixel 8 Pro (50 MP sensor) can reach 25–80 MB uncompressed — well above this converter's 20 MB upload limit. DNG files converted from existing DSLRs via Lightroom retain the size of the source RAW. For large Pixel DNG files, use the phone's native JPEG export in Google Photos. For Lightroom-converted DNGs, use lossless compression in DNG conversion settings to reduce file size before uploading.

Frequently asked questions

Is this converter free?

Yes — completely free with no account required. No watermarks are added to your converted files, and no subscription is needed.

How do I convert NEF to DNG?

Drop your NEF images into the upload zone (or click Choose files). Click Convert all to DNG. Once done, download each file individually or click Download all (ZIP) for the full batch.

Are my images stored after conversion?

Converted files are held on the server only long enough for download, then automatically deleted. No images are retained beyond your session.

NEF to DNG converts Nikon Electronic Format files into the Digital Negative format, moving Nikon raw sensor data from a proprietary container into an open archival standard. NEF is Nikon's RAW format, used across the full lineup from entry-level Coolpix compacts to professional D-series DSLRs and Z-series mirrorless bodies. Each NEF file encodes unprocessed 12-bit or 14-bit sensor data along with Nikon-specific metadata: white balance, Active D-Lighting settings, Picture Controls, and detailed Exif from the camera's metering and focus systems.

DNG (Digital Negative) is an open format specification published by Adobe and standardized as ISO 12234-4. Unlike NEF, whose decoding depends on Nikon maintaining current decoder support in operating systems and software, DNG is fully documented — any developer can implement a reader from the specification alone. Converting NEF files to DNG makes them readable by any DNG-capable application without Nikon-specific decoders, which matters for archives that need to remain accessible as camera brands update or discontinue their proprietary formats.

The conversion preserves the complete raw image: the Bayer-pattern pixel grid, color matrix, forward matrix, noise model, and lens correction tables all map from NEF's makernote structures to standardized DNG tags. No demosaicing or image processing occurs — the DNG output is raw data in a new container, not a processed image. File size typically decreases 15–25% compared to the source NEF because DNG applies lossless compression that NEF files often don't use by default.

How to convert NEF to DNG

  1. Click Choose file and select a NEF file exported from your Nikon camera. Files from D-series DSLRs, Z-series mirrorless, and Coolpix cameras with RAW mode are supported, up to 20 MB.
  2. The upload area confirms the filename and size once selected. The tool runs at maximum quality automatically — no compression level or output options to set.
  3. Click Convert to DNG. Server-side processing extracts the raw data and metadata from the NEF container and repackages it in DNG format. Most files complete in 5–20 seconds.
  4. Click Download DNG when the result appears. The file downloads with the original filename and a .dng extension, ready to open in Lightroom, Capture One, darktable, or any other DNG-capable raw processor.

Technical details

NEF uses a TIFF-based container with Nikon makernote tags that encode the raw sensor data plus a full-size JPEG preview. The raw data is typically 14-bit linear from D-series bodies and 12-bit from Coolpix models. Nikon embeds the Active D-Lighting tone curve setting and Picture Control parameters as makernote data alongside the raw values — these influence how Nikon software and some third-party apps display the preview, but they are not baked into the pixel data.

DNG version 1.4 tags cover all the information Nikon stores in NEF: the color matrix (transforms camera-native color space to XYZ), the linearization table, the black and white point levels for each channel, the noise model (photon shot noise and read noise per ISO), and per-channel lens correction coefficients. All of this maps to published DNG tags during conversion. The raw Bayer data from the NEF is compressed using the same lossless predictor scheme Adobe Lightroom uses internally, which is why DNG files are often smaller than the source NEF despite containing identical pixel data.

Nikon's newest Z-series mirrorless cameras use the NRW format variant for compressed RAW and NEF for uncompressed RAW. This tool handles NEF files. NRW files use a different internal structure and require separate handling.

When to convert NEF to DNG

NEF to DNG — frequently asked questions

Does NEF to DNG conversion change the image or lose any data?

No image data is lost. The conversion repackages the raw Bayer pixel values from the NEF container into a DNG container without processing the image. The same 14-bit sensor values, white balance, color matrix, and metadata are present in both files. What you see in Lightroom when opening the DNG should be identical to opening the source NEF.

What Nikon-specific metadata is preserved in the DNG?

Camera body, lens, focal length, aperture, shutter speed, ISO, GPS if present, white balance setting, and Exif timestamps all transfer to the DNG in standard tags. Nikon-specific makernote data (Active D-Lighting level, Picture Control settings, focus point data) is carried over in the DNG's OriginalRawFileData or CameraCalibration tags — the level of access to this data depends on the raw processor you use to open the DNG.

Will my Lightroom develop settings still apply after converting NEF to DNG?

Yes. Lightroom stores develop settings in its catalog, linked to the filename and capture metadata, not the file format. After converting NEF to DNG and re-importing, you can update the catalog references and the develop edits carry over. The DNG will render from the same raw data the NEF contained, so your adjustments apply to the same underlying image.

Is DNG smaller than NEF?

Usually, yes. DNG applies lossless compression to the raw data by default. NEF files from many Nikon bodies are stored uncompressed or with Nikon's own lossless compression. The DNG lossless predictor scheme typically produces files 15–25% smaller than uncompressed NEF for the same pixel data, with no quality difference.

Do Z-series NEF files work the same as D-series?

Z-series mirrorless bodies produce NEF files structurally similar to D-series DSLR NEFs, and conversion works the same way. The main difference is bit depth (Z-series uses 14-bit raw by default) and the color matrix values specific to the newer Sony sensors Nikon uses in Z-series bodies — these transfer correctly to DNG.

Is this tool free?

Yes. No account, no rate limit for normal use, no charge per file.
