About TIFF → ARW conversion

What is TIFF?

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is a high-quality, flexible format used in print production, professional photography, and archival scanning. It supports lossless compression and multiple colour spaces, making it the standard for print-ready files.

What is ARW?

ARW (Alpha Raw Workflow) is Sony's proprietary RAW format used by Alpha series cameras — from the A6000 series to the A7R V, A9, and A1. It stores 12 or 14 bits of unprocessed sensor data per channel, giving photographers full post-processing latitude for exposure, colour, and tone before exporting to a shareable format.

About ARW

ARW (Alpha Raw Workflow) is the proprietary RAW file format used by Sony Alpha cameras: the A6x00 series (APS-C mirrorless), the A7 series (full-frame mirrorless, I through IV), A7R, A7S, A7C, A9, A1, and the cinema line (FX3, FX30, ZV-E1). ARW files store uncompressed or losslessly compressed sensor data — typically 12 or 14 bits per channel — before any in-camera processing such as Creative Style profiles, Active D-Range Optimiser (DRO), or sharpening is applied. Like all RAW formats, ARW captures the complete sensor output at full dynamic range, providing maximum latitude for exposure and color correction in post-production.

The compatibility tradeoff is the same as any proprietary RAW format. ARW files require Sony Imaging Edge (formerly PlayMemories), Adobe Lightroom, Capture One, or a compatible RAW editor to open. Browsers, email clients, social platforms, and most general-purpose applications cannot display ARW natively. Converting to JPG produces a universally compatible output.

When ARW to JPG is the right call

Delivering shots to clients, posting to Instagram or X, uploading to a content management system, sending previews by email, or submitting to a stock library that requires JPG — all require a compatible format. This converter provides a fast path from ARW sensor data to a shareable JPG, PNG, or WebP without a full post-processing workflow.

About this conversion

ufraw-batch decodes the ARW sensor data using default auto white balance and a linear tone curve. Imagick handles the output format (JPG, PNG, or WebP). The conversion produces a neutral, flat render without Sony's Creative Style profiles (Standard, Vivid, Portrait, Landscape, Sunset, etc.) or DRO processing. The result does not replicate what the camera's in-camera JPEG engine would produce. For camera-matched output, export from Sony Imaging Edge or Adobe Lightroom with your chosen Creative Style applied.

File size note

Sony ARW files range from 12–50+ MB depending on sensor resolution and in-camera compression setting (uncompressed, lossless compressed, or lossy compressed RAW). Files from high-resolution bodies — the A7R IV (61 MP uncompressed) and A7R V (61 MP) — routinely exceed the 20 MB upload limit. Set the camera to compressed or lossy RAW to reduce file sizes, or export a reduced-resolution JPEG from Imaging Edge, then use this converter for format-only conversion.

Frequently asked questions

Is this converter free?

Yes — completely free with no account required. No watermarks are added to your converted files, and no subscription is needed.

How do I convert TIFF to ARW?

Drop your TIFF images into the upload zone (or click Choose files). Adjust the quality slider if needed, then click Convert all to ARW. Once done, download each file individually or click Download all (ZIP) for the full batch.

How many files can I convert at once?

Up to 5 images per batch, maximum 20 MB per file. All images in your queue are converted in parallel. Start a new batch to process more.

Are my images stored after conversion?

Converted files are held on the server only long enough for download, then automatically deleted. No images are retained beyond your session.

TIFF (Tagged Image File Format) is the archival and print-production standard across professional photography, document scanning, and prepress workflows. It stores pixel data losslessly — no compression artifacts, no quality degradation on re-save — at 8-bit or 16-bit color depth per channel. A TIFF from a drum scanner or a high-end flatbed captures the full tonal range of the original print at precision that JPEG cannot match. That is why print labs, stock photo agencies, and archive departments specify TIFF as the preservation format. ARW (Alpha Raw Works) is Sony's proprietary RAW capture format used across the full Alpha mirrorless lineup: the A6x00 APS-C series, the full-frame A7, A7R, A7S, and A7C lines, the A9 sports bodies, and the A1. Camera-original ARW files store 12 or 14 bits of unprocessed sensor data before any in-camera processing — no Sony Creative Style, no Breathing Compensation, no Active SteadyShot metadata applied.

Converting TIFF to ARW repackages the TIFF pixel data into an ARW-compatible container. The output opens in Sony Imaging Edge Desktop, Adobe Lightroom Classic, and Capture One — the same applications that handle camera-original ARW. It does NOT create genuine Sony sensor data. TIFF is an already-rendered image; the conversion transfers the existing pixel data into the new container without modifying those pixels. Extended 16-bit precision in a TIFF source is downsampled to the 8-bit sRGB representation in the ARW output, because the ARW container in this conversion stores a standard 24-bit RGB decode rather than multi-bit RAW channels. The practical value is catalog organization: a photographer whose Lightroom library is built around Sony ARW files can bring TIFF sources — scanned film prints, client-supplied high-resolution archives, compositing exports — into the same collection structure.

Processing runs server-side. ImageMagick reads the TIFF and writes it into an ARW-compatible container. Both the uploaded TIFF and the output ARW are deleted from the server after download. TIFF-specific metadata — scanner model, photometric interpretation, resolution tags, embedded ICC color profiles — does not carry through to the ARW output. The file contains no Sony body identifier, no lens data, and no capture timestamp.

16-bit TIFF and bit depth

A 16-bit TIFF carries 65,536 tonal steps per channel, compared to 256 steps in an 8-bit image. This extended precision is useful during editing — adjustments to curves, levels, and color grading produce smoother gradients with less banding than equivalent edits on 8-bit data. The ARW container produced by this converter stores 8-bit sRGB data. If your TIFF workflow requires 16-bit output throughout, keep the file in TIFF format and convert to ARW only for catalog-organization purposes after editing is complete.

File size expectations

TIFF files can be large. An uncompressed 8-bit TIFF at 1920×1080 is approximately 5.9 MB. A 16-bit TIFF at the same dimensions is approximately 11.8 MB. TIFF-LZW and TIFF-ZIP compressed variants can be smaller, but lossless compression ratios depend heavily on image content. The converted ARW is similar in size to the uncompressed TIFF pixel dimensions at 24-bit depth. A 3000×2000 TIFF produces an ARW in the 17–18 MB range. Check the 20 MB upload limit against your TIFF file size before uploading; large-format scans at 600 DPI or above frequently exceed it.

Multi-page TIFF files

Multi-page TIFFs are common in scanned documents where multiple pages are bundled into a single file. This converter processes the first page only. If you need a specific page from a multi-page TIFF, split it first using a PDF or TIFF page-extraction tool, then upload the single-page file.

When to convert TIFF to ARW

TIFF to ARW — frequently asked questions

Will the converted ARW open in Sony Imaging Edge Desktop?

Yes. Sony Imaging Edge Desktop opens ARW files regardless of source. The file opens in the viewer and allows basic adjustments. Features that require embedded Sony camera metadata — lens distortion correction, specific Creative Style rendering, Breathing Compensation — will not apply because the output contains no Sony body or lens identifiers.

Does converting 16-bit TIFF to ARW preserve the 16-bit color precision?

No. The ARW container in this conversion stores 8-bit sRGB data. The 16-bit tonal precision of the TIFF source is downsampled to 8-bit at decode time, which is standard for online converters. For workflows requiring 16-bit output throughout, keep the file in TIFF format.

What happens to TIFF transparency in the converted ARW?

ARW has no alpha channel. Any transparent pixels in the TIFF are composited against a solid white background before writing the ARW output. The resulting ARW has white in place of any transparent area.

Can I convert a multi-page TIFF to ARW?

The converter processes the first page of a multi-page TIFF. For additional pages, split the TIFF into single-page files first using a TIFF or PDF page-extraction tool, then upload each page individually.

My TIFF from a high-resolution scan is over 20 MB. What are my options?

Large-format TIFFs at 300 DPI or above frequently exceed the 20 MB limit. Crop the TIFF to the region of interest in an image editor, reduce the scan resolution in your scanner software, or export a flattened JPEG from your scanner software and use a JPEG-to-ARW converter instead.

Is this free?

Yes. No account required, no watermark on the output, no usage cap beyond the 20 MB per-file upload limit.
