GIF files grow because animations store full frames by default. A two-second loop with 24 frames at 480×270 pixels can exceed 8 MB before any optimization is applied. Most of that space is wasted: frame three is 95% identical to frame two, but the unoptimized file stores all the redundant pixels anyway. GIF Optimizer removes that redundancy. It compares consecutive frames and discards every pixel that hasn't changed — only the modified regions are stored in the optimized frame. The animation plays identically in every browser, email client, and chat app. The file is smaller because the unchanged parts of each frame are gone.

Three optimization levels give you control over the aggressiveness of the pass. Light is the conservative choice: it coalesces all frames into their absolute positions and strips unchanged regions, but does not alter how frames are disposed. Use this on complex animations — multi-layer sequences, animations with partial transparency, or GIFs exported from professional tools — where you want guaranteed visual fidelity. Balanced applies a standard frame-difference optimization that produces meaningfully smaller files on the majority of animated GIFs while remaining effectively lossless in practice. This is the right default for most use cases. Maximum runs a deeper redundancy pass that achieves the greatest size reduction, but occasionally alters frame disposal methods on GIFs with complex per-frame transparency or very fast frame sequences. Always preview a Maximum-optimized GIF before distributing it.

What optimization preserves and what it doesn't change

Optimization runs server-side through ImageMagick's frame-layer engine. The uploaded GIF is decoded frame by frame, the optimization pass is applied, and the output GIF is recomposed. Color depth, frame count, frame delay values, loop count, and dimensions are all preserved. Files are deleted from the server within 30 minutes. No watermark is added to the output.

GIF is a format with a fixed 256-color palette per frame. This optimizer does not alter color depth, dither patterns, or palette assignments — it operates on the frame-layer structure only. If you need to reduce color depth as well (for aggressive lossy compression beyond what lossless frame-layer optimization can achieve), that requires a separate lossy-compression tool.

Does this produce a lossy or lossless result?

Light and Balanced modes are lossless — every frame renders identically to the original. Maximum mode is technically lossless in most cases but may alter frame disposal methods on GIFs with complex per-frame transparency, which can occasionally cause subtle rendering differences on very fast or multi-layer animations. For safety on complex GIFs, use Balanced.

Why is my savings percentage zero or very low?

Some GIFs are already well-optimized, particularly those exported from Photoshop's Save for Web dialog, GIPHY's processing pipeline, or dedicated GIF tools that include optimization on export. If Light and Balanced both return near-zero savings, the file is already close to its minimum lossless size. Maximum will occasionally produce a small additional reduction. Beyond that, lossy techniques — reducing color depth below 256 or converting to WebP/AVIF animation — are required for further size reduction, but those change the format.

Can the optimizer make a GIF larger than the original?

In rare cases, yes. The coalescing step expands each frame to its absolute position before optimization, and on some already-optimized GIFs the net result after recomposition is marginally larger. This is displayed as 0% savings (never as a negative percentage). The original file is always available if this happens — the tool shows the before and after sizes, so you can decide whether to download the optimized version.

What is the maximum file size?

20 MB. GIFs above 20 MB are uncommon for standard web use but occur in screen-recording exports or high-resolution animation projects. For files above the limit, splitting the animation into shorter segments is the practical workaround.

Does optimization affect animation speed or loop count?

No. Frame delay values (stored per-frame in the GIF's Graphic Control Extension block) and the loop count (stored in the Netscape Application Extension block) are copied unchanged from input to output in all three optimization levels.

How does GIF compression work?

GIF uses LZW (Lempel-Ziv-Welch) compression on pixel data within each frame, and stores only the regions that change between consecutive frames — this second technique is called frame differencing or frame optimization. An unoptimized GIF stores each frame as a full image; an optimized GIF stores only the pixels that differ from the previous frame. Because LZW compresses runs of identical values efficiently, smaller frame-difference regions compress more aggressively. This optimizer applies frame differencing via ImageMagick's frame-layer optimization passes without altering the LZW encoding itself.

How long does optimization take?

Typically 2-8 seconds depending on file size, frame count, and the optimization level selected. A 5 MB GIF with 50 frames takes around 3-4 seconds on Balanced. Maximum mode runs an additional redundancy pass and may take 2-3 seconds longer on complex files. Processing is server-side via ImageMagick — there is no browser-side processing delay added on top.

Are my files stored or shared?

No. Uploaded GIFs and optimized outputs are stored temporarily on the server during processing and deleted within 30 minutes. Nothing is shared with third parties, retained for training data, or kept beyond your session. The server does not log file contents.

How does GIF optimization compare to WebP or MP4?

GIF is the most universally supported animation format — it works in every browser, email client, Slack, Discord, iOS Messages, and Android Messages without a video player. WebP animation achieves 25-35% smaller files than optimized GIF at the same quality, but email clients (Gmail, Outlook) do not animate WebP, and older browsers may not support it. MP4 achieves the greatest file size reduction (often 80-95% vs. unoptimized GIF) but requires a video player — it will not animate inline in most email clients or chat apps. If your target is the web or documentation (GitHub, Notion, README), MP4 or WebP is the right choice for size. If you need the animation to work in email or chat with no player, GIF is still the standard.
