How GIF Speed Adjustment Works

Every animated GIF stores a delay value between frames, measured in centiseconds (hundredths of a second). A delay of 10cs produces 100ms per frame. The GIF Speed Changer reads the original delay from your GIF using ImageMagick, applies the chosen multiplier or custom value, and writes all frames with the new timing. A 2× preset halves the delay to double the playback speed; a 0.5× preset doubles it to halve the speed. Pixel data, color palettes, and loop count are untouched.

One practical detail worth knowing: most browsers and GIF viewers silently clamp any frame delay under 20ms to 100ms. This means a GIF originally animated at 50fps (20ms per frame) will appear to play at 10fps in a browser even if you don’t change the speed. If you are targeting platforms like GIPHY, Tenor, or X/Twitter, aim for delays of 30–50ms per frame (20–33fps) to avoid unexpected speed corrections at the viewer end.

Common use cases span a wide range: social media reaction GIFs are typically sped up 1.5–2× for punchier timing; technical documentation walkthroughs benefit from slowing to 0.5–0.75× so viewers can follow each step; product demo loops are often tightened to 1.25–1.5× to reduce banner fatigue. For upload to GIPHY or Tenor, most creators target 15–24fps and a file size under 5 MB — adjust both speed and frame count accordingly.

When deciding between the multiplier presets and the custom delay field: use the multiplier when you want to scale the existing rhythm proportionally (e.g., double speed across a complex multi-delay GIF). Use the custom delay field when you have a specific target fps in mind or when the source GIF has inconsistent per-frame delays and you want all frames normalised to a single value. The tool reports the original average delay in the preview panel so you can calculate the exact custom value you need.

Frequently asked questions

How does changing GIF speed work?

GIF animation speed is controlled by the delay between frames, measured in centiseconds (1/100 second). The GIF Speed Changer reads your GIF’s original per-frame delay, calculates a new delay based on your chosen multiplier, and rebuilds the GIF with the new timing applied uniformly to all frames.

What does the 2× speed preset do?

The 2× preset halves the inter-frame delay. If your GIF originally shows each frame for 10 centiseconds (100ms), the 2× version shows each frame for 5 centiseconds (50ms), making the animation play twice as fast.

What is the custom delay option for?

Custom delay lets you set an exact milliseconds-per-frame value (10–500ms) instead of a multiplier. Use this when you need a specific playback speed — for example, 33ms per frame produces approximately 30fps playback, and 41ms produces approximately 24fps. Typical web GIFs use 50–150ms per frame.

Will changing the speed affect GIF quality?

No. Only the inter-frame timing values are modified. Pixel data, color palette, frame count, and loop count are all preserved exactly. The output GIF is pixel-identical to the input in every visible frame.

What is the maximum file size?

You can upload GIFs up to 20 MB. Files are removed from the server within 30 minutes of processing.

How to change animated GIF speed online

  1. Click the upload zone or drag your animated GIF into it. Maximum file size is 20 MB.

  2. Select a speed multiplier — 0.25× (very slow) through 4× (very fast) — or choose Custom and enter a frame delay in milliseconds. Default is 2×.

  3. Click Change Speed and wait a few seconds for server-side processing.

  4. Preview the result and click Download GIF to save your speed-adjusted file.
